About the Event

Do you work in Wealth Management? Are you looking for ways to build your network and want to hear directly from those already in the business? Are you curious about what opportunities are available to you in the Wealth Management Sector? Be sure to join us on July 20 for an in-depth moderated panel discussion and Q&A that will include audience participation. A full networking session with the panelists and hosts will follow.

The theme of this event is Women in Wealth: Learnings and Opportunities, and brings together six of Scotiabank’s top female wealth professionals, who will discuss and collaborate on how women can succeed in this key subsector of Canada’s finance sector.

Karina Alfarano, Regional Director, ScotiaMcLeod Toronto Regional Office, Leslie McCormick, Senior Wealth Advisor and Portfolio Manager, ScotiaMcLeod, Melissa von Haehligh, Branch Manager, ScotiaMcLeod Toronto Plaza, and Jill Wilson, Branch Manager, ScotiaMcLeod Toronto Plaza will provide an overview of their career trajectories, address the barriers they’ve faced along the way, and will provide practical advice to the young women just starting out. They will also cover opportunities in the Wealth Management industry.

Marta Cano Escobar, Managing Director and Head of Investor Solution, Equity Derivatives Canada, and Stacy McBurney, Associate Director, Equity Capital Markets will co-host the event and lead the interactive discussion.

Karina Alfarano

Karina’s journey in Wealth Management started 25 years ago. After graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree from York University, Karina started in a Cage role with RBC Dominion Securities. Her natural knack for customer service combined with her curiosity to learn, propelled a 17-year career with RBC. Her love of languages and multi-cultural heritage led Karina to International Wealth Management in 2005. To date, she has spent most of her career strengthening the Canadian wealth management offering to non-Canadian clients, leveraging the expertise of its people, the strength of the Canadian banks and the safety of our regulatory environment. With responsibility today of both Canadian and International markets at ScotiaMcLeod, her priority is to continue to partner with Wealth Management businesses across Scotiabank’s footprint to lead our clients throughout their financial journey.

Leslie McCormick

Senior Wealth Advisor and Portfolio Manager, Scotia McLeod

Leslie is an experienced Senior Wealth Advisor and Portfolio Manager, focused on Total Wealth Management. She integrates portfolio management with proactive financial planning. Leslie has helped clients successfully navigate investment markets, while guiding them financially through both "normal" times and times of change. Leslie is a published personal finance author, having co-authored the book “Bank on Yourself – Why Every Women Should Plan Financially To Be Single, Even If She’s Not” in 2019. She obtained her degree from Bishop’s University, concentrating in finance and economics, and holds the following professional designations: Charted Alternative Investment Analyst (CAIA), Chartered Investment Manager (CIM), and Financial Management Advisor (FMA) and is a Fellow of the Canadian Securities Institute (FCSI).

Melissa von Haehling

Branch Manager, ScotiaMcLeod Toronto Plaza

Melissa joined Scotia Wealth Management in 2016 and has been in the financial services industry for 25 years. Her career has included client facing roles, and in management at the branch, regional and national level. Today she manages a branch at ScotiaMcLeod. Melissa prides herself on her accountability and perspective and shares her genuine and upbeat perspective with each Wealth Advisor team in her branch. As a true team player, Melissa enjoys connecting with all teams and takes pride in helping them wherever she can- with answers to questions, by addressing concerns and providing timely information. She enjoys the ever-changing nature of the Wealth Management Business. Born in Muskoka, Melissa resides in Toronto with her husband and two children. In her free time, Melissa enjoys exploring and experiencing other cultures through travel. Above all else, she values spending time with family and friends.

Jill Wilson

Branch Manager, ScotiaMcLeod Toronto Plaza

Jill graduated from the University of Saskatchewan and obtained a Bachelor of Commerce degree. Jill has been in the financial services industry since 1999. Beginning at the branch level, Jill has worked in many areas of Wealth Management, including regional and national roles. Today, she manages a branch for Scotia Wealth Management in Scotia Plaza, Toronto. Jill believes in working with her teams to effectively support each advisory practice. Jill is passionate about delivering top-level service and committed to supporting Advisor teams in delivering outstanding wealth management solutions to their clients. Jill resides in Toronto with her husband and two children. Outside of work, Jill enjoys golf, skiing, and travel. Jill is active in her community, volunteering her time and supporting children’s charities.
