Join our Vancouver Steering committee for a virtual discussion to hear from buy-side and sell-side professionals about what a day in their job really looks like.
The event will feature 5 breakout rooms covering different areas of the capital markets. Each breakout room leader will provide an overview of their industry, speak about their role and experiences, and answer any questions you may have. Students will be assigned to smaller breakout rooms and rotate every 10 minutes, meeting every speaker throughout the evening.
This session will bring together mid to senior level professionals from a variety of areas in capital markets to provide some background and insight into their roles within the industry.
*This event is designed for students enrolled in graduate or undergraduate programs who are interested in pursuing a career in finance.

Laura Baker works on the Institutional Equity Sales desk in Vancouver, managing relationships with institutional portfolio managers, providing market commentary and generating trade ideas. Laura began her career at Macquarie Commodities and Global Markets in their Equity Rotational Program. Before joining CIBC, she worked as an equity research associate at TD Securities, covering the Metals and Mining space. Laura graduated from the Smith School of Business at Queen’s University in 2016 with a Bachelor of Commerce.
Brandon Newell is an Executive Director of Financial Solutions within the Global Markets segment at CIBC Capital Markets where he is responsible for the fixed income cash, credit, and derivatives business in Vancouver. Brandon manages institutional relationships with a focus on Treasuries, Mortgage Originators, Insurance Companies, Hedge Funds, Pension Funds, and other Real and Alternative Asset Managers. Brandon began his career on the sell side at CIBC in June 2012 after concluding a one year contract at Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan within their Tactical Asset Allocation, Investments division where he was part of the Equity Products group that specialized in trading volatility as an asset class.
Brandon is active in several community care initiatives at CIBC, including the United Way Campaign, Movember, One for Change, Miracle Day, and the CIBC Annual Squash Tournament for Run for the Cure, which he helped originate. He is also a passionate advocate for equity, diversity, and inclusion and has served in multiple capacities at Women in Capital Markets with a focus on men’s engagement. He is currently seated as Co-Chair of the WCM Vancouver Chapter Steering Committee.
Brandon holds a Bachelor of Commerce with a concentration in Finance from Saint Mary’s University and is a CFA Charterholder.
Olivia Evans is a Business Development Analyst with the Cash Management Group at Canaccord Genuity. She is responsible for prospecting institutional clients and managing relationships with over 45 banks and credit unions across Canada. Prior to Canaccord, Olivia started her career in Toronto as a Securities Valuation Analyst. Olivia holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree from DeGroote School of Business at McMaster University.
Mengdi Li, CPA, CA, is an Equity Research Associate in the mining group at TD Securities. She is responsible for helping cover a portfolio of Canadian precious metals equities.
Mengdi began her career in 2011 at PwC, where she obtained her CPA, CA designation and worked primarily on mining audit clients. She then joined the financial reporting team at Kinross Gold Corporation in 2014, before starting her current role at TD Securities in 2017.
She holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the Smith School of Business at Queen's University.
Morgan works on the Canadian, Global and Monthly Income Portfolios at Vancity, conducting bottom-up fundamental analysis on public companies and providing input on new ideas and portfolio construction. Morgan began her career at the British Columbia Investment Management Corp (BCI) in Victoria as a co-op in various roles including Marco Research, ESG Integration, and Global Equities. While working as a co-op Morgan was a Portfolio Manager for the University of Victoria’s Applied Portfolio Management Program managing a North American Portfolio with 6 fellow students. Following her co-ops, Morgan joined BCI full time as an analyst on their Partnership Portfolio working on private debt and various hedge fund and long-only equity investments. Morgan graduated from the University of Victoria in 2020 with a Bachelor of Economics and Minor in Business
