WCM's SheBiz Calgary Chair, Hannah Puccetti, speaks with Breakfast Television about WCM's upcoming SheBiz event in Calgary on October 17th. This will be Calgary's first SheBiz event, which aims to encourage young women to pursue careers in business, science, technology engineering and math. Watch Interview >>
SheBiz is a free day-long event for girls in grade 10 – 11 that offers unique access to business and STEM leaders and exposure to diverse and exciting career opportunities available to women in these fields.
Studies have shown that female high school students receive better high school grades in science, technology, engineering and math than their male peers, but that they are less likely to enroll in those programs in university than their male counterparts. While it's been shown that having more women in leadership roles is good for individual organizations and the economy as a whole, there are a number of factors that result in fewer women being in leadership roles and in science and technology, and young women need to be informed of the opportunities that are available to them.
As female students begin to make important decisions that will impact the direction of their education, such as course selections and applying for post-secondary studies, SheBiz aims to encourage them to consider a career in business, science, technology, engineering and math, and to enroll in the necessary prerequisites for post-secondary education in these areas.
Now entering it's sixth year, WCM SheBiz continues to experience overwhelming demand. Our 2016 SheBiz Toronto sold out in 45 minutes, with 350 registrants and a waitlist of more than 260 students. Each year. SheBiz has garnered significant media attention, including front page coverage in the Toronto Star business section, as well as coverage from BNN, Business Vancouver, and The Night Side.
2016 also marked the national expansion of SheBiz. We hosted our first SheBiz in Vancouver, which was a huge success and was attended by more than 250 female students. This year, we're pleased to be offering SheBiz events Montreal, Calgary and Victoria, in addition to Toronto and Vancouver.
