Position Description
The opportunity
We are seeking a Managing Director to lead our Global Trading Team based in Toronto. Reporting to the Senior Managing Director, this MD will have the overall responsibility for the OTPP public markets trading business and lead a team of 10+traders. The MD will be responsible for delivering a best execution service across Equities, Fixed Income, Credit, FX and Commodities, both in the cash and derivative markets.
Who you’ll work with
In addition to leading your team and collaborating with all asset class portfolio teams, you will also maintain close working relationships with trading, IT, Operations, Legal/Compliance and risk staff to ensure appropriate resolution of all trading issues and be a contributing member of the Investment Division Credit and Counterparty (IDCC) committee. The MD will also partner with Capital Markets senior leaders around building businesses and allocating resources to best meet the Total Fund strategy and represent OTPP’s Total Fund trading needs to external trading partners or counterparties.
What you’ll do
Lead a team of trading professionals including staff development, performance management, coaching and mentoring
Ensure the Global Trading Team is delivering the best execution services, market insights and trading advice to program managers, including providing hands-on support, guidance and assistance to individual traders, where required
Develop the trading team culture and building the capability of the team, as well as ensuring that trading good practices and are implemented with trading errors minimized
Implement and refine the Global Trading long term strategy
Drive and prepare the Global Trading team for trends in market structure and its impact on current/future investment strategies
Lead the Relationship Management function with external partners for Capital Markets activities
Assist in the development of policies/procedures designed to ensure compliance with all industry/regulatory requirements
Maintain close working relationships with trading, IT, Operations, Legal/Compliance and risk staff to ensure appropriate resolution of all trading issues
Contributing member of the Investment Division Credit and Counterparty (IDCC) committee
Represent Total Fund trading needs to external trading partners or counterparties
Maintenance and development of highly effective compliance protocols
Ensure that fund exposures at clearing houses and counterparties remain within allowable limits
Direct impact on total return through reduction of execution costs; Indirect influence through enhanced Alpha derived from market insights.

Required Skill / Experience
What you’ll need
- At least 15 years of related experience within the financial industry (including 3+ years supervising a trading desk at a major bank or respected sell-side or buy-side institution)
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field preferred (e.g.: Financial Economics, Engineering, Computer Science or other
- Thought leadership concerning the future of trading in Capital Markets
- Strong foundation and strategic view of post and pre-trading analytics across all asset classes
- Expert knowledge of trading across all asset classes globally
- Expertise in the development and implementation of Order Management and Execution Management systems (OMS and EMS)
- Expert in electronic trading systems and algorithmic trading strategies
- Fluent in pre- and post-trade trading analytics
- Knowledge and experience of Bloomberg, Trace, and other market pricing and valuation tools
- Cross-asset class, geographies, regulatory complexity, internal collaboration, and technology complexity.
- Ability to handle multiple priorities while remaining detail-oriented
- Experience in developing and managing corporate relationships
