Position Description

The opportunity

Based in our office in Toronto, the Investment Associate will be an integral part of the High Conviction Equities (“HCE”) team and focus on global consumer (discretionary and staples) public equities. The HCE consumer team is responsible for a highly concentrated portfolio that delivers outsized idiosyncratic returns. The Associate will support senior investment professionals in analyzing potential investment opportunities and help with monitoring consumer companies under coverage.

Who you’ll work with

In addition to the team in Toronto, you will have the opportunity to work closely with a team of professionals across Ontario Teachers’ global offices. You will also interact with colleagues in Alternative Capital Solutions (“ACS”) within the HCE team, Private Capital and other asset classes. You will also interact with external partners such as research analysts, management teams and key opinion leaders in the industry.

What you’ll do

  • Analyze and evaluate potential investment opportunities within consumer discretionary and staples sectors
  • Generate practical investment insights from bottom-up research on business models, key value drivers and investment risks
  • Develop and maintain detailed financial models clearly identifying recommended valuation range, critical business drivers, sensitivity analysis etc.
  • Prepare comprehensive investment memos / presentations clearly articulating industry insights, investment thesis and recommendations for the senior leadership team
  • Actively participate in meetings with consumer company management teams and outside experts
  • Monitor ongoing financial and operational performance of companies under coverage
  • Generate bespoke industry analysis in collaboration with the team. Monitor industry developments and disseminate relevant information to the team
  • Partner with the broader equities team in Toronto as well as across offices (or other departments at Ontario Teachers’) on certain transactions or initiatives
  • Support Ontario Teachers’ office-wide initiatives

Required Skill / Experience

What you’ll need

  • Minimum 3+ years related work experience in asset management, equity research, investment banking or similar roles at leading firms
  • Experience in covering consumer public equities is strongly preferred
  • Experience using Bloomberg
  • An undergraduate or graduate degree from a university or equivalent
  • CFA and / or other meaningful designations are considered an asset
  • Very strong analytical and quantitative skills and proven understanding of fundamental investment analysis
  • Outstanding attention to detail and ability to take ownership of tasks
  • Special emphasis on accounting, valuation and financial modelling skills
  • Ability to quickly develop an understanding of economic / business characteristics, conditions and trends across a range of consumer industries
  • Excellent communications skills, both oral and written
  • Ability to demonstrate skeptical critical thinking and to generate independent insights from research process
  • Willing / able to travel internationally on occasion
  • A high degree of maturity and initiative, with the ability to work effectively and independently, must be a team player
  • Demonstrated experience in Python, SQL and/or Power BI considered an asset, although not required
