The Global Investment Banking group provides equity and debt underwriting as well as corporate finance advisory services to corporations.

Position Description

The professionals in CIBC’s Mergers & Acquisitions group are dedicated specifically to advising clients on mergers, acquisitions, divestitures, joint ventures, hostile takeovers, takeover and proxy defense as well as other strategic transactions and initiatives.

The role of a Director within CIBC’s Mergers & Acquisitions group is challenging and fast-paced. It requires a passion for excellence, a desire to work as part of a highly-successful team and a strong work ethic. The Director will work closely with professionals from industry coverage and product groups within CIBC to complete assignments that impact the firm's bottom line through deal execution, deal identification and building of client relationships.

What you'll be doing:

Leading the Execution of Merger & Acquisition Transactions and Providing Flawless Client Service

  • Play a lead role in the execution of client transactions including acting as the central point of contact for the deal team and client team members as appropriate throughout a transaction.

  • Coordinate and liaise with industry and product group partners within CIBC to deliver comprehensive client-focused solutions.

  • Conduct client meetings alongside other CIBC team members.

  • Lead and oversee financial modeling, valuation and other analyses and provide corresponding recommendations to internal and client stakeholders.

  • Together with industry and product group partners, develop recommendations and provide deal-specific strategic and tactical advice to clients.

  • Maintain responsibility for the overall information and communication flow on deal teams.

  • Work closely with outside working group members including legal advisors, accounting advisors, auditors, etc.

Leveraging Internal and External Relationships for the Benefit of Clients

  • Assist industry coverage teams in the development of new business ideas and opportunities.

  • Coordinate client-focused and deal-focused “brainstorming” sessions with relevant team members and product specialists.

  • Develop and maintain an internal network with industry coverage teams, product groups and other business groups.

  • Develop relationships and actively communicate with various appropriate client contacts.

  • Develop and maintain an external network of key contacts, including legal advisors, accounting advisors, shareholder services firms, communications firms, etc.

Managing and Coaching Analysts and Associates

  • Actively manage and mentor the Associates and Analysts that work with you and provide regular feedback to them.

Required Skill / Experience

  • Education You’ve Completed. Finance, accounting, mathematics, computer science or economics undergraduate degree. Completion of an MBA, CA, or CFA would also be beneficial.

  • Industry Experience. Minimum of 5-6 years of previous experience in investment banking or corporate finance with direct Mergers & Acquisitions experience.

  • Financial Skills. Aptitude for complex analytical work, including demonstrated knowledge of financial modeling, valuation techniques and practices, including cash flow and returns analyses. Knowledge of accounting principles relating to financial statement preparation and business combinations.

  • Technical Skills (Programs, Methodologies, Systems). Strong quantitative technical skills as it relates to basic computer applications (Excel, Word, PowerPoint), industry technology (FactSet, Bloomberg) and other applicable software.

  • Communication Skills. Strong written and verbal communication skills and ability to effectively distill and succinctly communicate the results and implications of complex analyses to internal and client representatives. Proven presentation skills evidenced by ability to be a focused, confident and persuasive presenter.

  • Collaborative and Professional. Well-developed interpersonal and relationship-building skills in order to develop and manage relationships with clients, including both internal and external business partners. Unquestioned professionalism, ethics and reputation and proven ability to exercise strong independent judgment when making business decisions and/or representing CIBC Capital Markets.
