Position Description

What you’ll be doing

As an Associate Portfolio Manager (APM) you'll be reporting to the Senior Portfolio Manager, you'll be an integral member of the team within the Fixed Income group. You'll contribute to the management of bond portfolios, passive (plus), Liability Driven Investment (LDI), active Fixed Income, active 100% corporate funds, through qualitative and quantitative understanding of governments and corporate bonds focusing on North American issuers. This will involve a broad understanding of individual securities, actively assessing the worthiness of current holdings and the identification of investment opportunities in both the primary and secondary markets for funds managed by the team. You will also contribute to the team’s portfolio construction and decision-making process as well as assisting trading to all the Portfolio Managers. You'll contribute to marketing and client servicing efforts, (presentations, request for proposal) as well as various ad hoc analyses, projects and ESG efforts on behalf of the team.

How you’ll succeed

  • Leverage market knowledge - Conduct rigorous investment opportunities and ongoing due diligence of portfolio holdings across the team. Contribute analysis and investment ideas to improve various performance of the funds. Thorough understanding of interest rate cycles, yield curve, credit spreads and it’s various impact on individual portfolios.
  • Problem solving - Thorough understanding of each unique objective of each portfolio and how to achieve the value-added target with the risk constraints. Perform relative value analysis of different industry sectors and form views on both relative value and total return potential of individual investment opportunities.
  • Relationship building - Actively collaborate with other team members, analysts, and portfolio managers within CIBC Asset Management. Establish and maintain relationships within the finance community, including sell-side analysts, sales coverage and traders.

Required Skill / Experience

  • You give meaning to data. Strong credit analysis skills. This includes the ability to analyze and assess the business and financial risks of a company, industry and market as a whole. Experience as a financial analyst, contribution to idea generation for portfolio construction and investments, focusing on US and Canadian fixed income markets.
  • You can demonstrate experience in MS Excel and Bloomberg, including Bloomberg portfolio analysis and attribution.
