Victoria Chapter

WCM Victoria Chapter

WCM is pleased to announce our expansion to Victoria!  The chapter officially launched with a Kickoff Social on Thursday, Sept. 21, 2017. It was a high-energy, well-attended event in downtown Victoria. What did we hear? Our attendees want a network that brings together like-minded people so together we will advance women into leadership roles in the capital markets and related industries. View event highlights >>

WCM Victoria's chapter steering committee has been busy brainstorming and building bridges in our community to organize events we believe will benefit our members. Our goal is simple. In line with WCM, WCM Victoria wants to create a female-focused network of professionals across the capital markets and related areas to drive change in our city and beyond. This can happen if we work hard to grow the pipeline of talented, professional women on the Island by providing a network of support and advocacy so they can move up in the workplace. We want to help women in all stages of their careers access experts and executives locally and across the country so they can experience career development opportunities through mentorship and topic-specific training.

We think Victoria is truly unique because we can do the work we love from an intimate and stunning, West Coast setting, while being a part of a fast-paced, global industry.  We welcome your ideas and collaboration so we can advocate for women seeking leadership roles in their professions.

We hope to see you at upcoming WCM events in Victoria!

Trader: British Columbia Investment Management Corporation (bcIMC)

Main Goals of Co-Founding WCM Victoria:

I realized that I wanted to get more involved with Women in Capital Markets when I organized a WCM-bcIMC co-sponsored student outreach event with a former colleague. We were the only two females in Fixed Income and Trading at the time. In that moment, I realized I could help make a difference. Students need to know about the numerous rewarding opportunities available to them at companies like bcIMC, which strongly supports diversity in the workplace.

I know firsthand the importance of having access to a network of experts. As a Trader, information flow is critical, and that means that who you know - and the strength of those relationships - is often key to your success. Our goal is to create a strong network of investment professionals in Victoria, and to facilitate access to the broader WCM network across Canada. We will also strive to offer relevant career development opportunities for mid- and senior-level professionals through mentorship pairing, panel discussions and training sessions so that more women may reach the senior leadership level in their organizations.

Professional Experience:

Carmen joined British Columbia Investment Management Corporation (bcIMC) in 2008 and works on the Trading Desk in the Public Equities department which manages over $64.0 billion globally. She is part of a team of three that executed over 1 billion shares, valued at over $23.0 billion last year, using electronic, block, and program trading strategies. While primarily focused on trading for bcIMC’s internally-managed portfolios, her responsibilities also include transition management of externally managed portfolios and derivatives trading.

She has held progressively more senior roles at bcIMC, starting as a Client Consultant and moving to the Public Equities department in 2011 as an Analyst, working on the External Manager Program and strategy initiatives. Trading has been her role for the last three years.

Receiving her CFA charter from the CFA Institute in 2013, the Personal Financial Planner (PFP) designation in 2006, and a BCom with distinction from UVic in 2003, Carmen is strong in her studies and is a believer in life-long learning. She also speaks Spanish, Italian, and French fluently.

Portfolio Manager: TD Wealth Private Investment Counsel

Main Goals of Co-Founding WCM Victoria:

In 2016, I volunteered as a speed mentor for a WCM event in Vancouver focused on MBA students and alumni. It was incredible to share my professional story and see such enthusiasm and interest from the mentees in wanting to learn more. Moving to Victoria from Vancouver recently, I was inspired to build on that positive experience to help create a WCM network here. I have been able to progress in my career, in part, because of the people I have met through professional networks.

My goal with WCM is to expand our presence in Victoria and develop a network of forward- thinking, professional women who will forge deep and lasting connections, while working together to inspire and engage young women interested in pursuing a career within the capital markets. I am passionate about cultivating connections and I cannot wait to see how our Victoria Chapter will grow!
